LESS RIGID, LOW OR FREE BORON GLASS FIBERS TREATED WITH AMINE-CONTAINING SILANES

Low or free boron-containing glass fibers treated with amine functional organo silane coupling agents have a decreased performance in conforming to mold configurations over fibers having conventional amounts of boron and treated with aminefunctional organo silane coupling agents. The low or free boron-containing glass fibers treated with an amine functional organo silane coupling agent are also treated with a softening agent in an effective softening amount to overcome the additional brittleness. The softening agent in conjunction with the amine functional organo silane coupling agent provides a moisture-reduced residue on the glass fibers where the residue has a glass transition temperature of less than 30.degree.C. The chemical treating composition can also have one or more film forming polymers, one or more lubricants, and one or more additional coupling agents. The film forming polymer has a glass transition temperature in the range of around 30.degree.C to -20.degree.C.
