PURPOSE:To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal element which can present a display of good contrast through improvement of the orientation characteristics of liquid crystal, even though the element is of the type as an incorporation of a DHF liquid crystal of spiral structure which has a small pitch in the spiral and does not have a nature of storing the orientated condition. CONSTITUTION:A DHF liquid crystal 11 is pinched by a pair of base boards 1, 2 on which electrodes 3, 4 and orientation films 8, 9 are mounted so that a ferroelectric liquid crystal element is formed, in which each orientation film 8, 9 should have a thickness of 5nm or more and has an orientation characteristic for orienting a nematic liquid crystal with a pre-tilting angle smaller than 10deg. |
