HIGH HARDNESS Y-BA-CU-O TYPE SUPERCONDUCTING CERAMICS AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To improve mechanical strength without deteriorating characteristics as a superconductor by substituting Zr derived from amorphous zirconia hydrate as a specified Zr compd. for a specified percentage of Cu. CONSTITUTION:When starting materials for Y-Ba-Cu-O type superconducting ceramics are prepd., Zr is substd. for 5-25% of Cu by adding one or more kinds of amorphous zirconia hydrates selected from ZrO2-nH2O, Zr(OH)2-nH2O and Zr(OH)4-nH2O [where each (n) is an integer of >=1] and the resultant starting materials are fired to obtain the objective high hardness Y-Ba-Cu-O type superconducting ceramics. Each of the amorphous zirconia hydrates is preferably obtd. by drying a sol obtd. by hydrolyzing ZrO(NO3)2-2H2O and/or Zr(OC3H7)2.
