COVER OF HOUSING FOR EXPANDABLE TYPE AIR BAG

PURPOSE: To prevent generation of failures such as sagging on a cover surface, which are caused by prolonged exposure to heat or sunshine. CONSTITUTION: A cover 10 of a housing 12 for an inflatable air bag 20 is integrally-formed out of a resinous plastic material, provided with a hinge area 28 forming a door part 26 and a thin fracture line part 32. The door part 26 is rotated to an open position by the fracture of the cover 10 along the fracture line part 32 when an air bag inflates. A metal reinforcing element 34 embedded in the resinous plastic material includes segments 34b, 34c diverging to the hinge area 28 below the area 28. The segments form an open space 40 filled with a low-density collapsible, energy absorbing, rigid foam which exhibits minimal spring back. A filler 42 prevents sagging of the cover 10 above the open space 40 when prolonged exposure to heat or sun is experienced.
