PURPOSE:To perform highly precise matching at a high speed while holding the information of data obtained from an original image. CONSTITUTION:An image of an object 1 of extraction is picked up by an image pickup means 2, the analog image which is picked up is converted by an A/D converting means 3 from analog to digital to obtain a digital gradation image, and an edge extracting means 6 extracts an edge from the digital gradation image. A dot array on the extracted edge and a dot array at the periphery of the edge are stored as templates in a template image storage means 8 and a gradation image having density values at the respective points as pixel values is stored as a template in the template image storage means 8. A correlative value arithmetic means 9 performs correlative value arithmetic between the image stored in this template and the inputted gradation image to be inspected to find the maximum value. A matching position detecting means 10 decides the pixel position where the maximum value is larger than a certain threshold value as a matching position to extract the object 1 of discrimination and detect its position. |
