PURPOSE:To provide a method for selectively producing a 4-ethyl-1,3-di(substituted phenyl)pyrrolidin-2-one derivative useful as a herbicide, simply, inexpensively and in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A 4-ethyl-1,3-di(substituted phenyl)-3-pyrrolin-2-one derivative of formula I (R<1> is H, a halogen or methyl; R<2> is H, a 1-3C alkyl, CF3, a 1-3C haloalkoxy, a l-4C alkoxy, N02, CN, phenoxy, OH or a halogen; R3 is H, a halogen, CF3, a 1-3C alkyl, CN or NO2; (n) is 1 or 2; at least one of R<1>, R<2> and R<3> is a halogen) is reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing palladium metal or platinum metal and an amine, preferably under 10-200kg/cm<2> partial pressure of a hydrogen gas at 0-50 deg.C and an olefin part is selectively hydrogenated while suppressing elimination of a halogen atom on the benzene ring to give the 4-ethyl-1,3-di(substituted phenyl)pyrrolidin-2-one derivative of formula II. |
