A stable aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of ethylene, vinyl chloride and a half ester of maleic acid with an alcohol of at least 7 carbon atoms, or a salt thereof, is prepared by polymerizing the monomers with a free-radical catalyst in an aqueous medium of pH from 4 to 8. The half-ester may be that of dodecyl, ethylcyclohexyl or abietyl alcohol and the preferred catalyst is potassium, sodium or ammonium persulphate, sodium or potassium perborate or hydrogen peroxide. The products find application as coatings, impregnants or adhesives. |
