1,230,913. Preparing biological specimens. MILES LABORATORIES Inc. April 17, 1969, [May 1, 1968], No. 19776/69. Heading G2J. Apparatus used in the processing, paraffin embedding, and slicing of biological specimens comprises an open top base mould 10 on which fits an open mould 12 with a removable cover 14. A biological specimen, (86), Fig. 2 (not shown), from which a thin section is to be cut for microscopic observation, is first placed in the fluid permeable capsule formed by open mould 12 and cover 14 and is then cleaned and treated chemically as desired by immersing the whole capsule and specimen in specified liquids. The specimen is then transferred to base mould 10, and mould 12, with its cover removed, is fitted thereon. Molten paraffin is then poured through the perforations in mould 12 into mould 10 until the whole of mould 10 and most of mould 12 are filled. After cooling down, base 10 is removed leaving the specimen embedded in a block of solid paraffin (88), Fig. 5 (not shown) rigidly anchored to mould 12, which is so shaped as to fit, Fig. 7 (not shown) into a microtome with the specimen face (92) parallel to the path of travel (98) of the microtome blade (100). |
