[Also in Division D1] A fabric softener composition comprises (A) a diaralkyl quaternary ammonium compound of the formula wherein R is a phenyl, naphthyl, tolyl, anisyl, or xylyl group, R 3 is an alkyl radical (C 1-3 ) or a -(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H group wherein n is an integer of 1 to 9, x and y are each integers from 9 to 19 the integers having a sum of 5 to 19, and A is an anion preferably halide, nitrate, sulphate, methyl sulphate, ethyl sulphate, phosphate or acetate; (B) a mixed-di(long chain alkyl) quaternary ammonium compound of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are different and represent substituted or unsubstituted n-alkyl or secondary alkyl radicals (C 8-24 ), R 3 and A are as defined above; and (C) a dialkyl quaternary ammonium compound having the formula wherein R 4 is an alkyl group (C 8-24 ) and R 3 and A are as defined above. A preferred fabric softening composition comprises 1-20% by weight of fabric softening agents which comprise (A) 25% by weight di-aralkyl quaternary ammonium compound, (B) 1-74% by weight mixed di-(long chain alkyl) quaternary ammonium compounds and (C) 74-1% by weight dimethyl dialkyl quaternary ammonium compounds. These combinations are readily dispersible in warm water. Preferred compounds of formula (A) are dimethyl di(phenyloctadecyl) ammonium chloride, dimethyl di(naphthyloctadecyl) ammonium chloride, dimethyldi(anisyloctadecyl) ammonium chloride and dimethyldi- (phenylstearyl) ammonium chloride; preferred compounds of Formula (B) are dimethyl[hydrogenated tallow](C 11 -C 15 )-secondary-alkyl ammonium chloride, dimethyl[hydrogenated tallow]coco ammonium chloride, methyl #-hydroxyethoxy ethyl[hydrogenated tallow](C 11 - C 15 )-secondary alkyl ammonium chloride, bis- (2 - hydroxyethyl)[hydrogenated tallow](C 11 - C 15 )-secondary-alkyl ammonium chloride, and dimethyl phenylstearyl [hydrogenated tallow] ammonium chloride; and (C) is preferably dimethyl di-(hydrogenated tallow) ammonium chloride. The fabric softener composition may be employed in admixture with conventional anionic and nonionic surfactants and soaps together with dyes, perfumes, brighteners, and other optional ingredients including bleach, chlorine, sodium chloride and acetic acid. |
