Detergent compsns. contain a polyimide (I) or a hydrolysate of (I), where (I) has a COO<-> charge density of 0 to 5x10<-4> mole/g, is capable of acquiring a COO<-> charge density of at least 10<-3> mole/g in a wash liquor and is prepd. by thermal polycondensation of one or more amino acids (II) in the presence of an acid catalyst (III), the (III):(II) molar ratio being at least 0.001:1. (III) is selected from: (a) mineral or organic acids with a pKa of 5 or less and precursors of such acids; (b) salts of the acids of (a) with amino acids which may be the same as (II) or different; (c) salts of the acids of (a) with polyimides produced by polycondensation of amino acids which may be the same as (II) or different; and (d) Lewis acids.
