PURPOSE:To realize sufficient brightness and contrast by polymerizing a high polymer precursor while orienting a liquid crystal layer contg. a chiral compo nent and dichromatic dyestuff in a direction perpendicular to substrates by impressing an external field to this liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:The substrates 1, 8 formed with electrodes 2 and light scattering and reflective electrodes 7 are disposed to face each other and a liquid crystal/ high polymer precursor mixture is sealed into the spacing therebetween. A liquid crystal mixture formed by mixing 'M190657(R)' (produced by MELC), 'Dichromatic Dyestuff M344(R)' (produced by MITSUI TOATSU SENRY) and chiral component 'R011(R)' (produced by MELC) respectively at 8:2:10 is used as the liquid crystals. A biphenyl cliacrylate is used as the high polymer and is mixed with the liquid crystals described above at 5:95. The high polymer precursor is polymerized while the high polymer precursor is oriented in a direction perpendicular to the substrates 1, 8. As a result, the sufficient brightness and contrast are obtd. and the large-capacity display is realized without using active elements. |
