Prodn. and positioning of labels (12a, 12b) on corresponding thermoformed containers grouped in pairs, in rows, by introduction upwards from below into each forming cavity (6a, 6b) of the moulds (5a, 5b, ...) the free end of a band (11) of labels. The band (11) has two layers of labels back to back and while one free end (12a) is introduced into one mould the other free end (12b) is introduced into the neighbouring cavity. A free entry between a lateral face (7a, 7b) of a cavity (6a, 6b) that will receive the label and the bottom of the cavity (13a, 13b) is formed by a narrow passage (14a, 14b), into which the free end of the label is inserted. The label band is cut by closure of the passage by movement of the mould cavity base (13a, 13b) prior to moulding against the lower edge of the lateral wall.
