A car headlamp has a housing (2) sealed by a transparent cover plate (5) containing two headlamps (3 ,4). The light emitted passes through different regions (7, 9) of the cover plate. One of the lamps is continuously in use, the other is used intermittently. Behind the cover plate is a second transparent plate (11), trapping an air layer between the two which is independent of the bulb chamber. Both plates and the housing are all glued together. On the two plates there are corresponding collars (15, 16) and between the two there is a transition fit. The second plate is made as a cast resin or is "deep drawn".
