The flange connection has a seal (3) arranged between the contact surfaces (2c,2d) which run parallel to the longitudinal axis. Tensioning screws are provided whose pretensioning force is transmitted, at least partially through the metal contact surfaces along an annular contact line,. The annular contact line is formed radially inside the seal between the contact surfaces. At least one of the two contact surfaces, near the screws has a back-tapered free surface in an axial direction. The part between the free surface and the seal, belonging to at least one of the two contact surfaces, is set back axially in relation to the radially inwards part of the contact surface inside the seal. The seal is contained in annular grooves in both contact surfaces. The sealing ring consists of a metal base body and sealing elements contained in grooves on both sides of the basic body.
