Feeding flexible material to ironing or pressing machine

An ironing machine (1) has heated upper (9) and lower (8) continuous bands which compress and forward an input load of several layers of fabric. The input load is fed to the lower band (8) by a transport device (2) with a conveyor (K) which moves it from a first position remote from the lower band (8) to a second position adjacent to the lower band (8). A controller (31) adjusts the speed of the conveyor (K) to a value greater than the speed of the ironing machine (1) while the input load is between the first and second position. When the input load has passed the second position it adjusts the speed to be equal to the ironing machine (1).
