A description is given of a procedure for the preparation of new extracts of Cucurbita pepo and cultures thereof, the extracts obtainable and the use thereof in pharmacy and cosmetics. This procedure comprises the following stages: a) the grinding of the Cucurbita seeds, when it is appropriate, b) the extraction of the ground Cucurbita seeds with supercritical carbon dioxide at a temperature between 34 and 50degreeC and at a pressure between 110 and 150 bar in order to separate unwanted products, c) the extraction of the active substances from the ground Cucurbita seeds with carbon dioxide under supercritical conditions or with organic solvents, and d) the purification of the resultant extract by fractional countercurrent extraction with carbon dioxide under supercritical conditions. These extracts are used for the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy and related clinical manifestations. The extracts are used in cosmetics for the treatment of juvenile acne and as antiseborrhoeic agents.
