A dredger head, which includes an opening on its underside and delimits a chamber, is moved over the area of ground. In the chamber, a vacuum is maintained at such a level that the water level in the head is set at a certain distance above the border of the opening located in the underside of the dredger head. During the movement of the dredger head, the material forming the top layer of ground is removed from the chamber.
