A detector is directed at a region (18) of the part's (10) surface. At least this region of the surface is subjected to a process which affects, esp. increases, the radiation emissivity of the surface prior to the measurement process. This can involve subjecting the surface to laser radiation (14). The laser radiation can be produced by a Notum-YAG laser. Energy is coupled into this surface region for performing thermal treatment and at least this surface region is tempered after being subjected to the laser radiation.
