In apparatus for treating plastic materials a cushion 103 thereof is submitted to wedging action between two relatively moving surfaces 100, 101 so that all parts of the material are successively brought to the free surface 103. The coefficient of friction of the material with the surface 101 must be less than that with the surface 100. The material may be treated under reduced or increased pressure whereby it may be degassed or aerated. A batch processing apparatus, Fig. 6, comprises a housing 105 having a cylindrical chamber and a prismatic rotor 106 the cross-section of which may be a rectangle, Fig. 7, or other polygon providing a suitable wedging angle on the material (see Figs. 8 and 9, not shown), with angles rounded to co-operate with the chamber wall. The passage 146 may communicate with a vacuum pump. A continuous apparatus, Fig. 10, comprises a feeding conveyer screw section 109, a processing screw section 110, and a recompressing and discharging screw section 111. The feeding screw has a device as at 115 to limit delivery so that the threads of the processing screw are filled only partially with material. The cross-section of the processing screw 118 may be a rectangle, triangle or square (see Figs. 11-13, not shown), or other suitable polygon, or a square with extensions, Fig. 15. Material is supplied at 113 and the passage 117 may be connected to a vacuum pump. In a modification the mixing member is an Archimedean spiral, Fig. 17. In other embodiments the rotor is a cylinder co-operating with scraper surfaces projecting from the stator such as a single or multi-start interval Archimedean spiral 135, 136 of opposite hand to the feeding and discharge screws, Fig. 19 (see also Fig. 18, not shown), or a truncated cone 141 co-operating with four shoes 143 inserted in the housing (see Fig. 21, not shown, and Fig. 23), and having part-conical working surfaces. The required difference in coefficients of friction may be achieved by chromium-plating the scraper surfaces ; the clearance between the surfaces is of the order of 0À1 mm. The machines may be heated or cooled electrically or by a fluid medium.</p>
