The brake device comprises a felloe, a hub (26) and bound spokes. The hub and an axle fixing mount are connected by an axle screw. The hub is associated with a separate crown shaped retaining ring (12) having an integral brake ring (9) and integral guide and centering tube (11). A brake mask (1) is ratably secured on an axle mounted (7) support tube (5) of the wheelchair. The brake mask is applied to the inner shoe brake (14) with a draw lever (2) and is fixed onto the support tube by a U formed rotary securer (6,17,18).
