[Also in Division B8] A method of sealing an aperture 3 in a container 1 with a closure 4, in which at least the contact faces 5, 6 of the closure and container are made of a plastics material, comprises applying pressure to the closure 4 when it is in position over the aperture 3, rotating the closure relatively to the container so as to produce frictional heat between the contact faces causing fusion of part of the faces, and maintaining the pressure after the rotation has stopped until the fused material has solidified. At least one ridge 7 on one of the contact faces engages at its top only with the other contact face to facilitate rapid fusion. An annular rim 8, on either the closure 4 or container 1 adjacent the aperture 3, projects into an annular groove 9 in the other member, to prevent splinters produced during the sealing process from entering the container. In modifications the two contact faces may be provided on frusto-conical surfaces of the container and closure, Figs. 4-9 (not shown), and ridges may be provided on both contact faces. In one form the protecting rim 8, Fig. 1, is omitted, Fig. 6 (not shown), splinters accumulating in a V-shaped channel around the aperture.
