A glycoprotein having gastric acid secretion-inhibiting and anti-ulcerative activity is obtained from animal saliva or saliva-producing glands by acidifying an aqueous extract thereof to eliminate proteins having isoelectric points in the regions pH 4-4.6 and 5.4-5.6, adding a water soluble zinc salt to the mother liquor, collecting the precipitate, adding to it in an aqueous solution of a zinc-chelating agent (e.g. sodium citrate, EDTA or glycine), redissolving the precipitate in an aqueous medium, dialysing the solution to remove the zinc chelate and fractionally precipitating the active material either by addition of ammonium sulphate or a water-mixible organic solvent e.g. ethanol or acetone. The active substance may be further purified by conventional procedures (gel-filtration, chromatography &c) and incorporated into compositions for pharmaceutical use.
