High-boiling partly vapourizable hydrocarbons, e.g. crude oil or residual oil, are cracked to olefins by contact with fine-grained heat carriers which are circulated through a cracking reactor and a preheating zone, and which are maintained in a fluidized state inside the reactor by introduction of the hydrocarbons and of steam through a plurality of nozzles distributed over the reactor cross-section, the hydrocarbons being first preheated and then separated into a vapour phase and a liquid phase, the two phases admitted into feed pipes to the nozzles through separate throttling elements, and the vapour phase and liquid phase being fed either jointly to all the nozzles or separately to two different groups of nozzles. Suitable apparatus is described.
