The building system comprises first elements (11,35) having two or more side edges with cut-outs (17,41) and/or first pegs (21,43) lying opposite two side edges of second elements (13,37) having second pegs (27,45). The cut-outs and/or first pegs of the first element are arranged at right angles to the second pegs of the second elements. By joining together the first pegs and out-takes of two first elements to form a two piece element in a plane, gaps (31,33,47,49) are produced in which the second pegs of a second element fit. One edge of the first element has two out-takes spaced from each other and two other edges have two pegs having smaller widths than the out-takes. The centre point of these pegs are at the same distance from the sides as the centre point of the out-takes. When two first elements are 'loosely' joined together, the inner and outer gaps are formed for accommodating one or the other edges of the second element.
