The drive unit has a cylindrical housing (1) enclosing a rotatable shaft (4), supporting at least one disc (5) incorporating one or more openings around the outside of the shaft. The housing has an inlet for a fluid drive medium, eg. pressurised air or steam, directed tangentially onto the periphery of the shaft discs, with an exit opening (8) for the fluid drive medium at one end face of the housing, adjacent the shaft bearing. Pref. the shaft is provided with a number of spaced discs, with the disc thickness, the relative spacing between the discs and the distance between the disc periphery and the inside wall of the housing each being a fraction of the disc dia.
