The assembly consists of a number of serially arranged units, each comprising a calendering roller driven from a variable speed drive by an endless chain, and an endless belt contacting a major portion of the calendering roller periphery and driven by an endless chain from the calendering roller. Pref. the belt is driven at a slightly greater speed than the peripheral speed of the calendering roler, and is operative to maintain a workpiece, e.g. a linen web, in contact with the periphery of the calendering roller, and the peripheral speeds of the calendering rolers are arranged to maintain the web under tension. The assembly can operate at high speeds.
