A doctor, in particular for coating paper or cardboard, has a longitudinal axis and dosaging channels which extend transverse to the longitudinal axis. The doctor has individual elements such as thin blades arranged in a row alongside of each other and extending along the longitudinal axis and held together in spaced relationship by an elongated carrier to form the dosaging channels. The elongated carrier can be fastened in a holder for being held against the surface being coated. The carrier has slits corresponding to the direction of the dosaging channels to be formed. Thin blades can be fixed in the slits in order to form the dosaging channels by the spaces between the blades. The blades have normally a curved shape or are imparted a curved shape by a pressing device and, with their convex side, form the pressing surface against the surface to be coated, which may be for example a paper or cardboard web or a roll conducting such a web.
