POLYPHENYLENE SULFONE FIBERS AND A METHOD FOR PRODUCTION THEREOF

Disclosed are polyphenylene sulfone fibers mainly consisting of a structural unit represented by the general formula <IMG> (wherein x is 0 or 1 or 2, ?, the average value of x is 1.0 to 2.0 and the bond attached to the benzene ring is in the para- or meta-position with respect to the SOx group). The fibers can be obtained by oxidizing polyphenylene sulfide fibers mainly consisting of a structural unit represented by the formula <IMG> (wherein the bond attached to the benzene ring is in the para- or meta-position with respect to the S atom) with an organic peracid. The fibers of the present invention have very excellent heat resistance and chemicals resistance and are useful for the production of woven, knitted or n-on-woven sheets or fabrics, particularly filters for refining concentrated sulfuric acid or nitric acid.
