[Also in Division F2] A fifth wheel anti-jack-knife coupling comprises a king pin 14 fixed by a bolt 15 to the upper part 11 of a casing 10, the lower casing part 12 being clamped using bolts 22 to the upper part and there being rotatable about the pin a sleeve 24 having a tongue 26 for engaging in the fifth wheel plate slot such that on relative rotation between the articulated vehicle parts the sleeve rotates about the pin, wherein keyed to casing part 12 and the sleeve are respectively two interleaved series of friction plates 30, 29 which may be urged into engagement to prevent the said rotation when the vehicle is braked. The plates are urged into engagement by a piston 34 within the casing, the space above the piston being connected to the vehicle air brake line. Upon limited operation of the brake pedal, actuation of the piston 34 may be achieved without application of the vehicle brakes. ' |
