In a method of photonitrosating cycloalkanes by nitrosating a cycloalkane with a nitrosating agent while irradiating with light to form the corresponding nitrosation product, the source of the light is a sodium vapour lamp satisfying the following conditions: (a) not less than 50% of the total amount of light having a wavelength of 3800 to 7800 A.U. consists of light having a wavelength in the range of 4500 to 6500 A.U. and (b) 5 to 80% of the amount of the light having a wavelength in the range of 4500 to 6500 A.U. consists of light having a wavelength in the range 4500 to 5500 A.U. A high pressure sodium lamp is preferably used in the process. The lamp may also contain a Group O element or an element other than sodium of Groups I to III. Nitrosating agents specified include nitrosyl chloride, optionally in admixture with hydrogen chloride, a gaseous mixture of nitrogen monoxide, chlorine and hydrogen chloride and a gaseous mixture of nitrose gas and chlorine optionally also containing hydrogen chloride. The examples describe the preparation of oximes from cyclohexane, cyclooctane and a mixture of cyclododecane and cyclohexane using a titanium reactor. The apparatus in Fig. 1 (not shown) is used for carrying out the process.
