In a method for improving the surface of a planar substrate, e.g. of chipboard plate, in which a layer in the form of wood veneer, fabric, e.g. linen, fleece or other product having a textured surface, is covered with one or more surface improving films of synthetic thermoplastic or thermosetting plastics materials or of carrier webs which are impregnated with these synthetic plastics materials and together with the substrate subjected to pressure using a pressure plate to adhere the layer to the substrate, there is interposed between the pressure plate and the surface-improving film(s) or impregnated web(s) a layer of thermoplastic material which is capable of flowing under the prevailing conditions of pressure, a thin, resilient separating foil which may have a surface texture being interposed between the layer of thermoplastic material and the surface improving film(s) or impregnated web(s) if the layer of thermoplastic material would otherwise stick to the surface-improving film(s) or impregnated web(s). The surface improving films may be of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, a polycarbonate, a saturated polyester, a cellulose ester or a polyamide or the surface improving resin may be a melamine-, phenol- or ureaformaldehyde impregnated into a carrier web, e.g. paper. The thermoplastic material having the required properties of flow may be hard or soft polyvinyl chloride, a polyalkylmethacrylate or polyethylene and may be in the form of a film of total thickness 0À1-2 mm., fused to the face of the metal plate or applied as a solution to the face of the pressing plate and the solvent driven off. The thin resilient separating foil may be of polyvinyl fluoride, cellulose acetate or acetobutyrate or polycarbonate and may have a thickness of 0À01-0À1 mm.
