A device which continuously forms a supply wire into a chain comprising a plurality of turns in each of which parts of wire are completely straightened comprises two rotary drums with pins projecting radially from their peripheries and means for winding wire in turns about corresponding pins of both drums, the distance between the corresponding pins of the two drums progressively increasing from the area of supply of wire to a maximum, so that the turns are stretched straight between the pins, and then progressively decreasing again. Wire 61 is wound around pins 3, 4, on a drum 1 and pins 5 on a drum 2, by a guide 7, pivotable, by cam means, on a slide itself reciprocated by a further cam. The drums 1, 2 rotate at the same speed on axes slightly inclined to one another so that the runs of wire between the pins on one drum and those on the other are stretched in their passage round the drums. Alternatively the drums may rotate about the same axis and the pins be located in planes at a small angle to one another. A ribbon of synthetic material from a spool 61, coated on one side with adhesive, is fed on the drum 1 behind the wire and a paper ribbon 68 is laid on top of the wire by a roller 69. The resulting assembly is peeled off the drums by a blade 83 and passes to apparatus for making capacitors wherein the upper side of the turn is cut, two straight parts of the wire are secured to a capacitor body and then the lower connections between the straight parts of wire is cut. |
