A device for selecting for display a particular card of a set of cards 42 forming, e.g., a telephone index, comprises lower and upper housing members 10, 11 hinged together, a magnet hinged to the member 10, and a magneticallyattracted strip attached to the upper member for engagemenet with the magnet to hold the parts 10, 11 in closed position from which the parts can be released by operating the hinged magnet, and means attached to the upper member 11 for selectively engaging the index cards and raising those cards above the required card when the upper housing member 11 is moved to open position. The cards 42 are supported on a platform 27 fixed to the member 10 and are mounted on a ring support 43 attached to a rod 16 mounted upon an extension 15 of a plate 14 fixed to the member 10. The upper nember 11 is hinged about the rod 16 and a spring 30 biases it to the open position. At the front of the member 10 a Z-shaped member 21 is hinged by slots 22 therein engaging projections 9 on the sides of the member 10. A spring 23a normally urges the member 20 against a front part of the platform 27. A strip 23 of plastic material is attached to the member 20, and at the ends of the strip 23 two magnets 25 are secured to the member 20. The upper housing member 11 has a front end portion 31 which may carry an index of the cards and also at its ends has metal clips 32 which contact the magnets 25 to hold the member 11 in the closed position. A selector member 13 slidable along the end portion 31 has an inwardly-directed tongue 37, and the cards 42 have progressively cut-away parts so that the tongue can be positioned beneath an exposed part of a card immediately above a required card. If the strip 23 is now pressed downwardly, the connection between the magnets 25 and the clips 32 is broken and the member 11 rises so that the tongue 37 lifts all the cards above the required card which is then exposed. The selector member 13 and the cut-away parts of the cards may be located along a side of the member 11. |
