An apparatus for welding two or more layers of fabric materials comprises an ultrasonic horn with a welding head 4 and an anvil 12 having a plurality of asperities 16 and being adapted to move the fabric materials to bring another portion into a working zone between the anvil and the head. The asperities may be formed by coating spherical particles onto a ceramic base and sintering to form an integral structure. Alternatively the anvil may be metal and the asperities produced by metal spraying or sputtering. The arrangement may be used to attach polyester elasticated lace material 17 to the top of nylon stockings 15. The anvil may be either cylindrical and rotated or planar. In the latter case, the stockings may either be repositioned on the anvil after one pass or else the anvil rotated through 180{. |
