Inhibition of growth and multiplication of mammalian tumour cells by inhibition of a malic enzyme which is specifically expressed in the tumour cells, in particular by inhibition of cytosolic NADP<+>-dependent malic enzyme or of mitochondrial NAD(P)<+>-dependent malic enzyme. Tumour diagnostic agents which react with malic enzyme isoforms, in particular monoclonal antibodies against cytosolic NADP<+>-dependent malic enzyme or against mitochondrial NAD(P)<+>-dependent malic enzyme. Pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of human oncoses containing an inhibitor of a malic enzyme expressed in tumour cells.
