A carriage is provided with a number of burners, directed downwards and outwards at 30-45 deg. Associated with each burner jet is an air jet which selectively deflects the flame. In e.g. a plant nursery, the carriage is arranged to move along a row of plants with the burners operating. Sensors are arranged to detect useful plants and to control the air jets to prevent them being destroyed.
