Imitation leathers are prepared by impregnating a fibre web with binder solution, coating one surface of the web with a solution of a synthetic resin, which solution has a viscosity higher than that of the binder solution, before the binder is coagulated, and then coagulating the binder and the synthetic resin simultaneously. The fibre web may be of cotton, flax, silk, wool, rayon, a polyamide, a polyester, polyacrylonitrile and polyolefin used either singly or in combination. These fibres may be modified. by composite-spinning, copolymerisation and grafting. The fibre length is preferably 10-100 mm. The web may be needle-punched or set by compression with a hot roll. The binder may be thermoplastic resins such as polyamides, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile and polyurethane, or combinations of two or more of these. The viscosity of the binder solution may be 20 to 10,000 poises. The binder may contain a filler such a wood powder and calcium carbonate, a pigment such as carbon black, an anti-foaming agent or an anti-oxidant. Then the solution may be pressed into the interior of the web by using a squeezing device such as a screen and mangle. The resin of the surface layer is then applied by reverse roll or knife coater. The coagulation of the binder and the surface layer may then be effected by extracting the solvent with a liquid such as water which is compatible with the solvent or by evaporating the solvent. A top coat of a nitrocellulose lacquer may be applied by spraying, coating or printing. |
