A hard coating is plasma sprayed onto a substrate (5) using a plasma burner with the ionised plasma flame passing centrally (6) through a double walled tube (2). Nitrogen gas is passed through the outer tubing (4) to flow concentrically around the plasma flame. The nitrogen acts both as a coolant and protective envelope.
