The metal dowel (A) comprises a sleeve (3), an expansion cone (G), and a screw working in the cone and a tapped guide sleeve. The screw has a reduced-diameter portion (9) forming a fracture point, and the cone is at the end of the sleeve and tapped (24) to take the screw. There is an expansion head (E) with jaws (23), at the forward end of the screw, held in position by a distance-piece (F). On turning the screw, the jaws are pulled onto the cone and expand into the masonry etc. until the screw fractures. The front half (12) thus formed then holds the jaws engaged and joins the guide sleeve and the sleeve together via the tapped bore in the cone. The sleeve also joins the front half to the rear one (7). By further turning of the screw head (1), the front half acts via the guide sleeve so as to give linear adjustment (X) for levelling the anchored equipment (D).
