The column has a tube fixed to the bodywork, a component joined to it being distorted plastically by a force acting on the tube in the lengthwise direction (a) of the latter. On movement of the tube (4) in this direction, the U-shaped fixing component (5) is distorted or sheared off by screws (7) fixed to the dashboard (6) and forming a stop. There can be an extension on the component working against the stop. There can be recesses (10) at the component sides through which fixing screws pass, and which are connected by openings (11) to the component edge (5") towards the steering-wheel, while extensions (12) protrude into the openings.
