Information channel data encoding, transmission, storage and decoding e.g. for HDTV signal

Transport data conforming to the MPEG2 standard are split (TSP) between three data layers (L1-L3) e.g. with different resoln., taken via Read-Solomon encoders (RS1 etc.), interleavers (IL1 etc.) and convolutional encoders (FC1A,FC1B etc.) to a symbol mapper which produces a common 64MR quadrature amplitude modulation signal for transmission. The output from each interleaver is divided into two data streams at different rates (r1,r2). Transport packets comprising each a sync. byte (SB), packet header (PH), useful data string (UD) and error protection bytes (EC) are read horizontally into and vertically out of rows (21-28) of a matrix.
