Optical force measuring device

The device provides separate or simultaneous measurement of the force and the force direction, using a force-controlled monolithic, or semi-monolithic, sensor oscillator, with additional polarisation-dependent modulation and active stabilisation. Pref. a photoelastic sensor element (101) is provided with mirrored ends (104,105) to act as the monolithic sensor oscillator, coupled to a laser source (102), the measured force applied perpendicular to the resonator axis, for inducing a phase anisotropy, compared with the phase anisotropy resulting from the additional modulation, to determine the force.
