Compacted balls of household waste is carried out to sea then lowered to a depth of at least 1km before release. The waste is dropped in an abyssal skip beneath the pycocline layer of the ocean, below which the water is not warmed by the sun. This depth ensures that, when released, balls of waste continue to descend to the ocean floor (3-5km). 50-70 Tonnes of waste are carried out to sea in the abyssal skip in a barge. The base of the barge can be retracted, allowing the skip to be lowered on cables (7) at a speed of 1m/s to at least 1km. When the skip reaches the required depth the pressure causes its base panels (15) to be released automatically (16), releasing the contents. This is done by water pressure acting on pistons which are normally held across the opening of the base panels by springs. The skip is then raised. The angled opening of the base of the barge helps it enter smoothly. The skip is held slightly above the base of the barge while this is closed then lowered onto the base. The cable used is 2km long with a breaking strain greater than 100 tonnes.
