PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound, having cholinergic functional activities and useful as a therapeutic agent for senile dementia. CONSTITUTION:This compound is expressed by formula I [R and R' are each H, a halogen, a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, a lower alkylthio, a lower alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, amino or cyano; (n) is 1-4], e.g. (R)-1-[4- fluorophenyl)-3-[3-(1-phenylmethylpiperidyl)]-2-imidazolidinone. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by carrying out the carbonyl-inserting reaction of a compound expressed by formula II with a cyclizing agent such as N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole, phosgene or diethyl carbonate at 0-150 deg.C. This compound is capable of activating the central cholinergic functions of a patient suffering from dementia, especially adult dementia or Alzheimer type senile dementia and effective in treating dysmnesia and has high safety. |
