PURPOSE: To produce a catalyst excellent in n-paraffin isomerization activity at low temperature and not containing a chloride as a support and to catalytically isomerize a paraffin using the catalyst. CONSTITUTION: A solid acid catalyst composition used comprises (i) a zirconium hydroxide support, (ii) about 0.01-60 wt.% group VIII metal of the Periodic Table and (iii) a heteropolyacid selected from the group consisting of the exchanged aluminum salt of 12-tungstophosphoric acid, the exchanged aluminum salt of 12-tungstosilicic acid and mixtures of those.
