In a multiple push-button switch assembly of the kind in which one of the push-buttons is held set by a slide assembly (Fig. 5) and can be released by depressing another push-button, an inertia device 25 is provided, responsive to acceleration of the switch assembly, to lock the slide assembly and thus prevent release of the push-button by the acceleration forces. The device 25 comprises a piston (27) and spring (32) (Fig. 3, not shown), movable in the same direction as the push-buttons 14 and having a spring force to movable mass ratio substantially less than that of any of the push-button switches. Each push-button 14 has an extension 20 which co-operates with an opening 40 in a fixed member 38, to prevent rotation, and with slides 42, 60 which are provided respectively with opposed latch portions 48, 67. Depression of a button causes an extension 20 to drive the portions 48, 67 apart against springs 80 by engagement with cam surfaces 50, 71. The extensions 20 also co-operate with a series of members 75 to prevent depression of more than one button at a time. The piston (27) is also provided with an extension 30 which is driven by acceleration forces parallel to the pushbuttons into recesses 58, 72 in the slides 42, 60. Since two opposed slides are provided acceleration forces parallel to the slides are also unable to release the switch. Cut-away portions adjacent the recesses 58, 72 allow the piston (27) to move a shorter distance to lock the slides than the push-buttons move to release them. |
