Means for forming either a rotary regenerator matrix or a hollow plate heat exchanger comprises heat absorbent plates having dimples formed on opposite sides which alternate with plane sheets so as to form fluid passages therebetween of uniform height. The dimples are so formed that a dimple extending outwardly from one face of a plate comprises an extension of a wall portion of a dimple formed on the opposite face of the plate. The hollow heat exchange is formed by bending two opposing edges of a plane sheet to the height of a dimple and welding the off-set portions to a dimpled sheet.
