The disc shaped lighting element (1) receives light input from the side (B) and transmits to cover discs (3,4) on one or both sides. A coating (2) can be formed between the discs that has a matrix pattern. The material can provide a reflecting or transmitting action. The discs of outer material can be selected to be transmitting or reflecting and the overall effect from the transmitting disc is of uniformly distributing the light.
