Ethylene and acetylene are produced by cracking naphtha in a regenerative pyrolysis furnace, e.g. of the Wulff type, in the presence of 1À5-2À2 pounds of steam/pound of naphtha, and at a feed rate of 4-6À5 pounds hydrocarbon/ minute/sq. foot of cross-sectional area of the furnace. Other process conditions are conventional, e.g. temp. 1000-2000‹ C., pressure 0À2-0À8 atmospheres, and residence time preferably below 0.02 seconds. Light, heavy, coker and straight-run naphthas are suitable feeds.</p> |
