<p>A method of forming a PDC drilling bit (12) including the steps of imposing a side drilling direction (Ds) on the bit (12), determining a total bit side force (Fs) acting on the bit (12), computing a walk angle (Bw) between the total side force (Fs) and the side drilling direction (Ds), and modifying a configuration of cutters on the profile of the bit (12) so as to change the walk angle (Bw) to a desired angle. The step of determining a total side force (Fs) includes the steps of determining a normal side force (Fn) of the bit (12), computing a total cutter friction force, and combining the normal side force (Fn) and the total cutter friction force so as to produce a total side force (Fs). The total cutter friction force is obtained by summing single cutter forces perpendicular to a direction of cut of the bit (12).</p> |
